In the coastal marshes of Guérande, located on Brittany’s southern shores, the age-old tradition of hand-harvesting salt thrives, using rakes during the perfect late afternoon conditions. This ritual dates back centuries. To safeguard their time-honored salt from industrial competitors and their marshes from developers, a passionate group of salt workers established the Les Salines de Guérande cooperative. Every summer, this union of 200 members comes together, sharing their collective harvest. Rooted in values of mutual support, equality, fairness, and unity, the cooperative is fueled by a profound sense of community pride in their product.
